COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2000 (June 5~9)
The 20th Taipei International Computer Show, organized by the China External Trade Development Council (CETRA) and the Taipei Computer Association (TCA), will be held from June 5~9 at the Taipei World Trade Center Exhibition Hall. As one of the world's top three information technology shows, COMPUTEX TAIPEI moves beyond experimental concepts and highlights items ready for mass production. Products like monitors, motherboards, desktop computers, scanners, CD-ROM drivers, graphic cards, power suppliers, mice and much more will be found at the fair. But more important is making connections. COMPUTEX TAIPEI is the best place for networking within the industry. This year the number of exhibitors is expected to exceed 1,100.
Nativity of the City God (June 6)
The City God, also known as Cheng Huang (城隍), is an ancient deity who has been worshipped for 2,500 years—before the time of Confucius. Cheng Huang literally means "wall and moat", which served as protective fortifications for cities in ancient times. This god is classified as an "earth deity" (as opposed to "heavenly"), as the protector of specific localities. The nativity of Cheng Huang on the 13th day of the fifth lunar month, which falls on June 6 this year, is one of the biggest religious events in Taiwan—especially in Shiahai City God Temple at Dadaucheng in Taipei (61 Dihua St., Sec. 1;
Here you can experience the most spectacular City God celebrations on the island. The festival begins two days before the City God's nativity with a "secret visit" conducted by the City God's retinue at midnight to examine and judge the virtues and vices of members of the mundane world in the local community. On the day of the City God's nativity, which is the climax of the celebration, numerous believers and excitement-seekers flock to see rites performed to invite the City God to come out of the temple. A ritual procesion then moves through the main streets of the neighboring area, so that the god can make sure of the maintenance of justice in his part of the world.
